Monday 7th June 1917 – At rest
Hello Mum,
Just about to go up to the lines. I hope we succeed; all the fancy chaps keep staring us down on parade like we are the scum of the earth. Maybe winning will show them.

Thursday 24th June 1917 – The front line
Hello again Mum,
We just lost 10 men to the fritz. I doubt those fancy chaps will change now.

Mr and Mrs Jones,
Your son, Alfie Jones, contributed well to the war. Unfortunately, he was recently shot in battle. He is currently kept in a hospital in Cardiff but it is not looking good.
Feel free to visit him anytime
Yours sincerely
Captain Watkins
